Mid Year Test and other items

Yesterday we started the Mid-Year Assessment.  It it not entered into the gradebook, but used to check how much progress has been made since the beginning of the year.  On the first test we hadn't done any of the learning and the average score was 13 correct out of 57.  Now hoping we can get to about 50% on this.

Here are the steps for today.

1. First Form

2. Play KenKen

3. ABCYa! Super Santa

4. SoftSchools Christmas Tree Light-Up

5. Snowman Skiing Game

6. Play The World’s Hardest Game

Congrats.  Tomorrow we'll be playing a game.

Finding the answer to "of" problems

Today we continued finding the answers to "of" problems.  They are percentage problems that have a whole number and a percentage.

They look like this:

25% of 15

85% of 49

10% of 90

Tomorrow we continue with problems that contain "what number" situations.

I'll post more about that later tomorrow.  We will do a short quiz on the percents and missing numbers on Friday followed by a level up opportunity to improve an grades that are less than a 3.

Tuesday, December 15, 2015

More Percents

Today we did problems like this.  We have a few ways that work to solve them and the practice will take some time to see results, but we'll get it.

I recommended percent and ratio/rate problems on www.khanacademy.org so do those today as well.

Lots of instruction and explaining today, looking to wrap up this week with a quiz and then probably the mid-year check up.

Percents

Today we are starting percents.  Here's some important information.

If you couldn't make it to class today, the assignment is at the big ideas website for the day.

Test today and some review problems

Today we're working on the Test on Rates, Ratios, and Ratio Tables.

First though, if you did the Quarterback thing with me yesterday Teddy Bridgewater threw for one touchdown.  :)  Funny how we can use math to predict things.  Sometimes.

Alright, so you finished the quiz, I have some review problems for you to work on today.  It isn't graded as a standard, but rather to see if there are any things we need to work on.

Please do not use a calculator, but do the work on a piece of paper to see if you really know how to do them.  Also, do it on your own.   Some are easy, some are tougher.  Do your best and you can skip ones you do not know.

The questions and answer spaces on on the following form.  Thanks and have a great weekend.  See you Monday.  I wonder if Aaron Rodgers will throw for two touchdowns as well.  :)

Desmos and Speak Up Survey

If you were unable to come to school today, please check the following:

1. Please go to big ideas math and do any/all assignments that you have.
2. Check yesterday's blog post and complete the shopping trip document.
3. Work on Khan for about ten minutes.

If you have extra time, check out desmos and try to make something cool.   You can save it with google if you want.  If not, just don't save and it will go away.  A lot of people like to try to create their name.

The day after the Fractions and Decimals Test

Today we get the results back from yesterday's test.

There is a list of things we need to do today before we get started on the next chapter.

First, we have a student survey please click on it and submit your answers

STEP ONE STUDENT SURVEY CLICK HERE

Second, please get your test from the small table in the front of the room under the multiplication table.  Check with me if you have questions.  There are two grades the one on the left is for fractions and the right is for decimals.  Highlighted numbers on the second sheet are correct and may have led to you getting a 4 on either of the standards.

Third, go to www.khanacademy.org and do the recommended skills that I recommended for you.

That should take most of the day, congrats on being one fifth of the way though the learning for math this year.  Any ones we'll work on a retake opportunity later this week.

Chocolate Fix and Multiplying Decimals

Golden Hour Games
http://www.thinkfun.com/playonline

Today we are multiplying decimals, the biggest thing is to not line up the decimals, but to count them at the end.

Set up like a normal multiplication problem, solve it, then count how many decimal spaces are in the factors and then move it from the right to left in the product.

When you finish the practice problems, please put your answers on this form:

Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Today we start with the first of three decimal operations days.  We will cover two of the four on the first day, addition and subtraction.

Here's the basic tip of the day: LINE UP THE DECIMALS

That's it, it's really that simple.  Of course you need to be able to perform the correct mathematical practices to get the correct answer.

Think of it like the buttons on a shirt.

TRIO Test Taking Strategies

Today we have a guest speaker/teacher from TRIO who is in math this rotation to share test taking ideas and tips to be a more complete student.

Tomorrow is environmental site, so we will not have math until Wednesday.

Our plan looks like this (note Mon and Tues are next week):
Wed: Addition and Subtraction of Decimals
Thurs: Multiplication of Decimals
Fri: Division of Decimals

Mon: Review
Tuesday: Assessment on Decimals

Where's Mr. Flaten?

Well, my wife and I were expecting a baby about a month from now, but he came last night.  So, I'll be gone for a few days.  Mrs. Oest will be teaching in the classroom for a week or two, until I return. In the meantime, I probably won't be updating the blog as frequently, so you can check out Mr. Nelson's blog for a version of what was probably done in class.

Here's the link:  http://mrnelsonsmathblog.blogspot.com/

GCF - Greatest Common Factor

Here's a method that we are going to look at to find the GCF easily for any numbers:

Upside down birthday cake

You can also use factor lists, or factor trees, but this way seems to be the preferred method for speed and accuracy.

This week we cover: GCF, LCM, and a review of adding and subtracting fractions.

STAR assessment

user names and passwords will be on the board.

Today we are completing the STAR assessment.  We do this a few times a year and all sixth graders in class will be doing their best on this and results will be available at parent/teacher conferences.  This shows if we are placed correctly, if more intervention is needed, or if there are opportunities for enrichment.  It is not pass/fail, so it will not be recorded in the gradebook.

We just completed prime factorization, or what we call factor trees.  Some key vocabulary words are prime numbers, composite numbers, and also the factorization.

That's all for now.

Order of Operations

Today we're starting Order of Operations, also we were assigned our first homework assignment today.  It's practice 1.1 and 1.2 which focuses on long division and exponents.  Expect one take home assignment a week with any and all topics we've already covered.

Powers and Exponents

Our homework had more Long Division, I was excited to see so many students know how to do this already.  The biggest struggles I saw were putting the wrong numbers up and having to redo the calculations and knowledge of basic math facts.  We'll get there.  I was also pleased to hear that some students told me, "This doesn't seem as hard as I thought it would be!"  Good stuff!

Couple of Days, no post

Wow!  The days are flying by!  We started off with whole number operations of all four varieties: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  Our first homework assignment was due on those skills.

Also, we learned how to log into and use Khanacademy today, so that can always be used as an enrichment, review of prior skills, and just homework time if you want something to work on for a few minutes each evening.

Thursday, September 3, 2015

Sign up for lots of stuff day!

Welcome to the blog, this a place where you'll be able to find out what we did or are going to do in class.  On the sides are links to different places that might help you learn.  Today we have three goals and we'll get as far as we can on them.

1. Congrats, you already made it to this site, that was first.

2. Go to https://bigideasmath.com/BIM/register and wait for the class code from Mr. Flaten.

3. If there is time we are going to try to log in to your www.khanacademy.org account and add Mr. Flaten as a teacher.

Tomorrow we'll go over rules and get started with our learning targets and standards.

Statistical Project

Statistical Question Project

Today we will begin working on our Statistical Question project.  Here's a quick overview of what you will be doing as you complete your project:

Statistical Question Project
Think of a statistical question that you could ask other students in this Math class.  It has to be a numerical statistic, not a categorical one.
  • Collect the data (ask your question to at least 20 different people)
  • Find the mean, median, mode and range of your data.
  • Indicate which measure(s) of central tendency best describe(s) your data. Explain.
  • Make four different data displays for your question.
  • Analyze your data and answer your statistical question.
  • Create a Google Presentation of your findings. You should have a slide showing each of the following:
              *SLIDE 1: Statistical Question
*SLIDE 2: Data (in a table)
              *SLIDE 3: Mean
              *SLIDE 4: Median
              *SLIDE 5: Mode
              *SLIDE 6: Range
*SLIDE 7: Best Measure of Central Tendency explanation
              *SLIDE 8: Dot Plot
              *SLIDE 9: Frequency table
              *SLIDE 10: Histogram
              *SLIDE 11: Box-and-Whisker Plot
*SLIDE 12: Answer to Statistical Question

Here is an example of a Statistical Question project submitted by one of Mr. Nelson's former students:

And we're back!

Monday we are starting to talk about percents and how to convert fractions back and forth to percents.  This can be a struggle, so we're trying to make it as easy as possible.  The assignment for today is the RPJ section of 5.5.

Also, a major focus now is the make sure all students have shown mastery of multiplication facts on xtramath.com.

Unless it's too cold, then we'll do it on Tuesday!  :)
