Level Up day

Hello everyone, the gradebook is up to date and all current scores are in the computer.  We did a level up day today and there was progress shown in moving from 1's to 2's and 3's on our skills.

We're moving into more rates and ratios and will assess on the topic around December 18th and doing a mid-year assessment of all 6th grade skills on the 19th to see how much we've learned.

Continued daily practice of xtramath is encouraged for those not yet done with multiplication and we are also in the middle of the Khan-test that will conclude on the 19th as well.

Monday, more practice of expressions

Today we are doing an assignment of things we learned how to do last week.

 Couple of reminders:
1. Use the distributive property where it is necessary.
2. Only combine like terms, so you can combine 5 + 8, but not 5x + 8.

They have to be either the same letter or just numbers. After you complete these, move on to xtramath to finish and do khan or mobymax until the last ten minutes, then you can do other things on the computer.

You can choose one set of problems to do, the first set is a little bit easier and the second is more of a challenge. You may also do both if you really like to do these types of problems. :)

Finally, if you run out of time, submit what you did and finish at home or wherever you can get to a computer. At the end of the assignment the secret word is: veggie tales.

Term 1 Review and some other things

So, today we did a term 1 review of all of the skills that we've covered so far.  This was interesting to see what we remembered as a group and what we need to continue to work on this second term.

We struggle with adding and subtracting fractions, especially with finding common denominators.

There are two properties that we are focusing on tomorrow:

Also, conferences are tomorrow and next Tuesday, hope to see you there!

There are many people close to done and remember this can be done at home as well.  Let's master those facts.

Monday, October 13, 2014

Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Today we start with the first of three decimal operations days.  We will cover two of the four on the first day, addition and subtraction.

Here's the basic tip of the day: LINE UP THE DECIMALS

That's it, it's really that simple.  Of course you need to be able to perform the correct mathematical practices to get the correct answer.

Think of it like the buttons on a shirt.

Also, congrats to the following students for completing xtramath yesterday:

  • Ava Z.
  • Olivia A.
  • Sydney F.

Decimals PreTest and Individualized Homework

Greetings!

Today we congratulate the following students for completing xtramath:

Chapter 2: Fractions and Decimals

Today we pre-test and start learning about fractions and decimals.  More specifically we are going to multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.  Then, we will start to work with all decimal operations later in the chapter.  This unit should take about three to four weeks, in that time start to talk about fractions and decimals at home.  If you have any examples you've talked about and want to share, please email me or comment on this post.

For example: "We were getting gas last night and noticed there were decimals on the pumps, so we figured out how many miles per gallon we got as a family."

Here are a few other things to consider as we start this chapter and the conversations you can have at home:

Least Common Multiples

Yesterday we did the Star Assessment, lots of data should come out of that and help to see strengths and gaps for each student.

Thursday though, we're on to the topic of LCM or least common multiple.  Guess what?  It's just like GCF, but you multiply all of the outside numbers together.

We'll watch the video today:

First Quiz of the Year

Today we are completing the first graded quiz of the year, it will be graded in three categories:

1. Whole number operations
2. Exponents
3. Order of Operations

There will be many opportunities to show knowledge of these topics if you scored a 1 or 2, including the test at the end of the chapter.

Tomorrow is an early release day, so not a normal math day, so we will resume on Thursday with Prime Factorization.

Thursday, September 11, 2014

Order of Operations

Today we're starting Order of Operations, also we were assigned our first homework assignment today.  It's practice 1.1 and 1.2 which focuses on long division and exponents.  Expect one take home assignment a week with any and all topics we've already covered.

Whole Number Operations, Specifically Long Division

Today we did more Long Division, I was excited to see so many students know how to do this already.  The biggest struggles I saw were putting the wrong numbers up and having to redo the calculations and knowledge of basic math facts.  We'll get there.  I was also pleased to hear that some students told me, "This doesn't seem as hard as I thought it would be!"  Good stuff!

Monday, September 8, 2014

Whole Numbers Operations

Today we reviewed whole number addition, subtraction, and most importantly long division.  Our focus of Tuesday will be long division.  There are four steps:

1. Divide
2. Multiply
3. Subtract
4. Bring Down

That's it!  We repeat that process until we run out of numbers to divide.

Also, we learned a little bit about Khan Academy.  This is a place to work on math more independently and also practice different levels of difficulty.  All the way from K to post secondary skills are found here.  There is a direct link on the right side of this page.
