New Level up Idea

To level up there is now another option in addition to the packets I also give out to show proof of learning.

Here's how it will work (I hope).

1. You check grades and see if there is anything you want to improve (less than 3)

2. Go to this form New Level Up Form

3. Complete and wait for a new assignment to appear in your assignments tab on Big Ideas Math (this might take a day or so)

4. Make sure you screenshot and email the score to me at john_flaten@msd.k12.wi.us so I can update your grade.

Thursday's Plan

Math II (period 1)

Head to Big Ideas and try the practice test.  This will be kind of difficult, so help each other out.  Maybe partners or even with the people in front or behind you.

Just a practice test, not graded for standards, but if you do this the test on Friday will be much easier.

Note: USE PAPER TO WRITE THINGS DOWN!  HONESTLY, DO IT!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math I (periods 4, 5, 6)

All right, so yesterday we started working on some algebra stuff.  Today we practice!  Woo Hoo!

On Big Ideas there is a fairly substantial assignment.  Quite a few problems, but they aren't that bad if you followed along yesterday.  Work with your partner.  Do your best.  The goal is 75% or better.  You have check answers and calculator available.

Note: USE PAPER TO WRITE THINGS DOWN!  HONESTLY, DO IT!

Yes, I say that all of the time, it's that important!

Penny Floor and Practice Test

Math II

Today we are going to talk about a penny floor (yes, it's a thing)

Use this link:  Penny Floor

Also, we'll try to level up on some less than 2 scored skills.

More algebra and some decimals

Math II

Watch this video if you are still wondering how to solve using algebra:

Math I

Intro to decimals.

Show your work and it will be a breeze.

Today we start with the first of three decimal operations days.  We will cover two of the four on the first day, addition and subtraction.

Here's the basic tip of the day: LINE UP THE DECIMALS

That's it, it's really that simple.  Of course you need to be able to perform the correct mathematical practices to get the correct answer.

Think of it like the buttons on a shirt.

Expressions and Multiplying Fractions

CARES

Today we watched a video called Caine's Arcade about a young man who created his own arcade out of cardboard boxes.  Then we talked about how his character and perseverance grew because of the experience.  Search it on youtube if you wish to see what I'm talking about.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math II

Interesting development.  We need to circle back to learn how the basics of algebra work.  Letters  have shown up and we're "totally freaking out!"  (Peg and Cat reference for those of you who know that show.)

Tomorrow we start filling in the holes and go from there.  However, I did get to show them how to find terms and like terms.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math I

Multiplying Fractions.  Today we focus on reducing and pre-simplifying.  Arguably one of the more persistent challenges in the first semester.

Test and other math items for today

Math 2 :  Big Ideas Test today on Rational Numbers.  Numbers 7 and 16 are challenge problems.  We'll see what, if anything, we need to review next week. We will also be submitting today and then resubmitting them on Monday to fix any errors you might have made.

Math 2

Today we did the practice test for Chapter 2 (Rational Numbers) in small groups so they could communicate and share knowledge.  It was awesome to hear the students saying things like:
  • show me how you did that
  • oh, I see what I did
  • Now this seems a lot easier
And the popular, but not very helpful
  • I did it in my head
Test tomorrow.  :) .

Rational Numbers and Chapter 1 Test

Couple of things going on today:

Cares: Grade Check and missing work report.  We also watched an interesting video of kids reacting to the "old" computer.  An Apple from the early 1980s.  Or as I call it, my childhood.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math 1: Today is the first test of the course.  It's on Long Division, Powers/Exponents, Order of Operations, GCF, and LCM.  We'll see how it goes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math 2: Oh boy, lots of stuff to review and start to use.

Here's the note/practice sheet from today:  2.4 Note/Practice Sheet

The goal was (is) to be able to fluently multiply and divide rational numbers.  In doing so, we had to review a few things, for example:

1. Changing a mixed number into an improper fraction
2. How to divide fractions
3. Multiplying decimals and what happens to the point in the answer
4. What are brackets and how are they different from parenthesis?
5. Review multiplying fractions
6. If the signs are positive or negative what's the answer going to be?
7. How to set up the problem for the most success.
8. Exponents and how to find something to the third power

I think that's about it.  I had to talk/teach a lot, so we'll do some extra independent practice tomorrow.

Subtracting Rational Numbers and Review for Test

CARES:
Here's a video I shared in cares today.  We talked about empathy, assertion, and many other traits.  We started by thinking of areas we might consider struggles each day and then watched this video about Richie Parker.

Fractions and Stuff

Today we'll review some things about factors.

Also, we need to reinforce some fraction operations, more specifically getting common denominators.

Finally, a small big ideas assignment for fractions to check knowledge.

More rational numbers and LCM

Math 1

More Least Common Multiple (LCM)

Father of the Bride Hot Dog LCM issues (movie)

We also started the assignment for Big Ideas on this topic:

Helpful tips:
 1. Write down the problem (now you own it and can do it)
 2. Show what you did, usually an error can be easily found and you don't have to start over completely.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math II

We started exploring subtracting rational numbers.  Lots of fractions and decimals.

Adding Rational Numbers and GCF

Math II

More adding rational numbers, it will look like this:

Check Big Ideas for any "overdue" assignments.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math I

Today we continue the quest down the rabbit hole into LCM (Least Common Multiple) .

It's like GCF, but a little different.

Integers and Exponents

Math II

Here's a video that might help explain more about subtracting integers.  Remember, this is a new concept for you.  Perfection is not the goal right now, it's about understanding and working towards be precise.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math I

We worked on Exponents and Powers today.  We will complete the assignment tomorrow for the Big Ideas online portion.
