The plan for today

I will not be at school today, so here's the plan:

CARES - grade check, SSR, talk about or look up Pearl Harbor if you have time.

WIN - khan or big ideas

Basic rundown: (periods 1,4,5,6)
1. Complete Big Ideas Chapter 1 Test

I know this is "review," but I want to see how much you remember and I will also look at it as a level up, so do well and I can update grades with it as well.

2. Complete all Big Ideas assignments that are "overdue"

Tomorrow is work room day, so get these done!

3. Work on Khanacademy.org or other math sites

Here are the current Khan leaders:

Rates (reteach and assignment)

If you missed class yesterday or if you just want a refresher on what we did, I have posted a video from Anywhere Math so you can check it out. It's well done, so you'll be able to learn a lot from it if you want to. Please plug in headphones first though, so we don't have the same video going all over the place. :) There is a big ideas assignment for 5.3, so complete that as well.

Chapter 1 Test

Today is the day that we see how much we've processed and stored in our memory.  It is the day that we see how much we've learned.  It is the day to see if we have the tools in our toolbox to solve the problems that arise in front of us on the sheet of paper.

To me there are different reactions to this process.  Some will get right to work, challenge accepted.  Some will begin and try different things with varied success.  Some will see the struggle ahead and retreat.

However, this is a process over product situation (Inky Johnson) you may get the wrong answer, but is the process correct.  Ultimately you will still have the wrong answer if you are wrong, but doing the correct process will yield results that are favorable more often than not.

Which team are you on?  Do your best.  If it went well, feel satisfaction in your hard work.  If it did not go well, modify, fix, re-learn, and start over for the next challenge.

First math problems and some games if you are interested

Today we did a quick overview of some math problems.  Some were challenging and some were easier.  Hopefully you have a feel of getting back into working with numbers to find solutions.  :)

So, if you finished and you want to relax a bit here are two games you can try out.  You might like one more than the other.

1. A game called Basketballs from hoodamath. You get to make baskets and knock over refs using arcs and angles.

http://www.hoodamath.com/games/basketballslevelpack.html

2. A game from think fun called rush hour.  Some of you have seen this before.  Your goal is the drive the red car out of the exit by moving other cars around. There are three levels if the first one is too easy.

http://www.thinkfun.com/play-online/rush-hour/

See you tomorrow when we'll get started with the bigideasmath site.

How fast can you throw?

Today we are answering that question!

Here's the process, we are going to be taking on the roles of pitchers and scouts.  The pitcher's job is to throw the ball.  The scout's job is to see how fast it goes.

Usually there is a radar gun involved, but we don't have one, so we are going to time how long the ball takes to leave the pitcher's hand and hit the object (probably a wall) by using a stopwatch.  (This would be a good use of your cell phone technology.

Let's talk about some problems here about timing and accuracy.  (This will be done in class)

Each pitcher will throw 1 to 3 times and all data will be collected by the scouts.  The fastest time will be used from each scout.

After all data is collected we are going to enter the data into the Google sheet.  (talk about integrity of data entry in class)

Each student will get a column to enter data in for their class.

The final step will be data analysis.  I will show you some cool things we can do with the sheets and possibly compare our speeds to different levels of players who pitch.

Let's have some fun and take this seriously.

Here's the link to the data entry:

Data entry form.

Make a Quiz Idea

Mr. Nelson had a great idea, so we're also doing it today.

Today in Math class we will be using Google Forms to create multiple-choice quizzes.  The content of our quizzes will come from anywhere in the Big Ideas Math book.  From Chapter One all the way to Chapter Ten.  Here are a few of the topics that students may choose from:

  • Long Division
  • PEMDAS (Order of Operations)
  • Exponents
  • GCF and LCM
  • Fractions and Decimals (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
  • Solving Equations using Algebra
  • Area of polygons (parallelogram, triangle, trapezoid)
  • Ratio Tables (What’s the rule?)
  • Plotting point on the Coordinate Plane
  • Solving and Graphing Inequalities
  • Surface Area and Volume of solid figures
  • Data and Statistics (mean, median, mode, etc.)

Here is a document with some helpful tips on using Google Forms:

Thursday task list

Two things to do today:

If you are Kendra L. from P4 or Nevaeh Bo. from P5 please try to do the STAR test today for math today instead of all of this stuff.  If not, we'll try to get it done tomorrow.  Here's the link:

https://hosted145.renlearn.com/156420/default.aspx

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. go to www.bigideasmath.com and work on the assignment for 15 minutes at least, then submit.  If you really want to finish it, you may.

2. Just like yesterday, I've created a form for you to follow today.  I hope it's part fun, part challenge.  We'll see.

Here's the link: http://goo.gl/forms/1e97oHyHxyAghlMN2

Finally, track and field day tomorrow, so no math, but we'll do more on Monday.

Computer review and new stuff today

Today we are doing stations, but not the kind where we move around, more like the kind where I keep a timer and then tell you when to "rotate."  There are going to be six "rotations" and I'll expect you to update your progress on the form below.

Statistics Project Launch and Finishing Your Chapter 10 Test

Greetings,
I'm of with Vanilla Thunder training for the Olympic basketball qualifiers coming up soon.  While I'm gone, I have a few tasks for you to try to complete.

First, we are going to complete a stats project of your own this week.  Today I want you to play with the template to see if you can put your data in and see how the editing works.

  • When class starts complete the first part together, I recommend writing the data on the board.  The question is going to be "how many letters are in your full name" First, Middle, and Last.  For example: Brett Lorenzo Favre would be 17 letters.  Do that for each person and you have a data set.
  • Next open this template and make a copy so you can edit it STATS PROJECT TEMPLATE
You'll notice that each slide has a task listed, try to make it match your data from the class.

Second, if you did not finish the test yesterday or were gone, it will be located in the window area either in the blue bin for "unfinished" or in the other bin labeled "I was gone."

Third, tomorrow we are going to be starting your stats project so you need a stats question that the answer is a number.  Start thinking ahead on that.  It will be a quick two day project.

State Testing and other stuff

Today is the second of two testing days in Cares classes.  For math yesterday we played a game called Take-Back-Toe.  It's a mix of mancala, backgammon, and tic-tac-toe.  There are simple rules, feel free to ask your child about it.  You can pretty much play anywhere with any objects.

In math today we are going to be using some statistical questions to play a version of family feud.  Should be interesting.

Friday is Earth Day, so no math.

Monday we'll begin the last chapter of the year focusing on probability and how to display data.

Tuesday, April 19, 2016

Chapter Nine Assessment

Today we completed the test on statistics from our 6th grade curriculum, the topics included:

- Mean

Back in the saddle

Actually, I've only ridden a pony and it was quite scary for me.  Anyways, I'm back to school full time and excited to see how much the students have learned and how much we need to fix.  This week we are going to be re-checking math facts to make sure we have the basics covered.

Today we are starting with a review sheet of problems from the start of chapter seven.  It is a start to algebra and how to show the process even though they are not difficult it's all about the process.

1. Student review sheet (going to try to get these corrected right away to see if there are gaps)

2. Khan Academy

I'll be back!

Well, for now I'm home with the baby, there's a bit of crying and he cries sometimes too :)

The gradebook is updated for now.  I'll check in and do it again at the end of the quarter for report cards, and I'll be back at the end of January.

Since I'm not there for the day to day stuff right now, you can probably check out Mr. Nelson's blog to see where we are in the book.

Here's the link if you don't have it:  http://mrnelsonsmathblog.blogspot.com/

My official day back is Friday the 29th.

I might post on here a few times while I'm gone, but not sure how often.  Thanks and see you later, see you soon.
