Dividing Decimals

Today we start dividing decimals in class and it is the final skill of our decimal unit.  Here are three things to do today to help you improve your skills.

Enjoy and we'll see how much review we need to complete tomorrow to prepare for our assessment.  Based on your work in class today, we'll either play a game or do more problems.

Congrats to Jun Y for completing xtramath!

TRIO day in math

Today we are not doing regular math class, rather Mr. Emerson from TRIO Talent Search is coming in to share test taking strategies for all students to be more successful in that area.  He rotates between classes and talks about a variety of topics including: organization, time management, listening, note-taking, and memory as well.

For math we are going to work on one more topic before our next assessment.  Here's the weekly schedule:

Monday : Trio Talent Search
Tuesday: Dividing Decimals
Wednesday: Probably more dividing and reviewing all operations with decimals
Thursday: Decimals Assessment (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
Friday: No School on this date

Congratulations to the following student(s) for completing xtramath math facts:

  • Daysun S.
There are many people close to done and remember this can be done at home as well.  Let's master those facts.

Adding and Subtracting Decimals

Today we start with the first of three decimal operations days.  We will cover two of the four on the first day, addition and subtraction.

Here's the basic tip of the day: LINE UP THE DECIMALS

That's it, it's really that simple.  Of course you need to be able to perform the correct mathematical practices to get the correct answer.

Think of it like the buttons on a shirt.

Also, congrats to the following students for completing xtramath yesterday:

  • Ava Z.
  • Olivia A.
  • Sydney F.

Decimals PreTest and Individualized Homework

Greetings!

Today we congratulate the following students for completing xtramath:

  • Emma R.
  • Journey W.
  • Zach ET.
Knowing these facts are KEY to your success in math!

We are completing the decimals pretest to see how many students already know them and can move on to more advanced usage of this skill.  Also, when it is complete students will get their fractions tests back and an opportunity to practice skills that are not yet at mastery.  ALWAYS WORKING TOWARDS MASTERY!

Here's the plan for the week:

  • Monday - Pretest and practice
  • Tuesday - Addition and Subtraction of Decimals Day 1
  • Wednesday - Early Release - Level Ups
  • Thursday - Addition and Subtraction of Decimals Day 2
  • Friday - Multiplying Decimals Day 1

Fraction Test and next up Decimals!

Greetings and Salutations,
Today we assess our knowledge of fractions.  Next week we point in the direction of decimals, get it, point, like a decimal point?

Congratulations to the following student for finishing xtramath multiplication:

  • Andrew V.

When you finish the assessment you may check out the following after xtramath if you're interested in pre-learning our upcoming skills:

Go to www.khanacademy.org and type "decimals" into the search box and you'll get lots of skills to help you get started.

Also, here's a semi-fun game that involves some strategy to get the highest score possible

Dividing Fractions

First, congrats to Caroline O. Hayden S. Madison R. and William O. for completing xtramath for the year! Please get a key from my desk, sign it, and hang it up on the door of success. So, today we divide fractions, it's just like multiplying, but you need to do the follow:

SKIP, FLIP, MULTIPLY, REDUCE It's that simple. :)

When you are done with the puzzle time sheet today here's a list of practice links for you to keep building your skills.

Chapter 2: Fractions and Decimals

Today we pre-test and start learning about fractions and decimals.  More specifically we are going to multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.  Then, we will start to work with all decimal operations later in the chapter.  This unit should take about three to four weeks, in that time start to talk about fractions and decimals at home.  If you have any examples you've talked about and want to share, please email me or comment on this post.

For example: "We were getting gas last night and noticed there were decimals on the pumps, so we figured out how many miles per gallon we got as a family."

Here are a few other things to consider as we start this chapter and the conversations you can have at home:
